HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

THINKING & REASONING WITH SPATIAL RELATIONS

Explore, discover & solve problems through fun & interactive lessons!

Our students develop thinking & reasoning skills in 6 different learning areas, using a unique balance of hands-on experiential learning, challenging puzzles and table work to build focus and attention span.

What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of our latest lesson which develops visual-spatial skills.

Her

NURSERY 1 (born in 2019)

As spatial awareness develops in children, they first begin to navigate space with their body, and eventually navigate space in their minds visually. However, they may still lack in explaining their thoughts verbally.

In this lesson, we aim to hone our Nursery 1 children’s spatial abilities while learning to link visual and verbal thinking about spatial relationships through a deliberate emphasis of prepositions of place.

As they accurately use prepositions such as on top of, under and in front of, they mark spatial relationships between persons, objects, and locations.

These concepts are fundamental for children to understand how they (their body) relate to the objects and things around them both immediately and geographically. Eventually, these help in visual motor planning and perception which are the precursors to handwriting and reading.

NURSERY 2 (born in 2018)

Determining left and right, avoiding obstacles when walking or running or kicking a ball require spatial awareness.

Spatial awareness skills like this require visual thinking, and it is important to complement visual thinking training with verbal thinking activities to ensure your child develops the well-rounded ability to articulate his/her thoughts.

In this lesson, your child learns to construct a complete sentence with prepositions to describe where objects are in the classroom. This activity trains your child to view things from different perspectives as well.

We also introduce the concept of substitution through a memory challenge. Substitution is also a key problem-solving technique in which children will use as they progress through our programme.

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2017)

Difficulty in visual perception can cause problems with cognitive processes!

To help our Kindergarten 1 children further be able to absorb what they see, organise it in the brain, and make sense of it, we focused on using visual perception to recognise the position of an object through relative relationship. After understanding positions from a relative point, they transit to develop visual motor integration skills, coordinating visual perceptual skills with body movements.

Such motor activities help to enhance their visual spatial processing skills greatly and help to boost their brain’s ability to interpret and make sense of what they see in the environment.

KINDERGARTEN 2 (born in 2016)

Positions, movement and directions are fundamental math concepts.

In this lesson, our Kindergarten 2 children worked on moving on grid activities as well as stepping stones to develop better essential spatial skills and logical/systematic reasoning skills.

As they work on these activities, they practiced their listening skills, memory and also spatial skills. Besides this, they also understand viewing objects from different perspectives. The use of stepping stones is also directly related to speed calculations in upper primary.

In all, these essential math concepts will help further children in all mathematics curriculum throughout all key stages, and also serve as an important life skill (Logic & Deduction).
