HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

THINKING & REASONING WITH MEASUREMENT

Explore, discover & solve problems through fun & interactive lessons!

Our students develop thinking & reasoning skills in 6 different learning areas, using a unique balance of hands-on experiential learning, challenging puzzles and table work to build focus and attention span.

What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of our lessons

NURSERY 1 (born in 2019)

Children are subconsciously exposed to measurement concepts in everyday activities. They learn to compare sizes of toys, portions of food and their own height to another’s.

When children become consciously aware of different measurement concepts, they are able to describe characteristics of objects, describe similarities/differences between objects using those common characteristics and eventually quantify the differences by measuring them.

As it is hard for young children to focus on more than their own singular perception or reference point, they tend to compare objects in opposites (e.g. big vs small).

In this lesson, we help children develop abstract thinking and reasoning skills through understanding the degrees of comparison. They worked on making associations and strengthened their hand-eye coordination in a creative clay play.

This also helps to set the foundational skills of estimation and logic which are essential in checking the reasonableness of answers.

NURSERY 2 (born in 2018)

Your child may be familiar with opposites like big and small or heavy and light. In this lesson, we work off your child’s knowledge of characteristics of things to understand relational frames of comparison, a key reasoning skill.

For example, we could say that ‘an elephant is bigger than a lion and a lion is bigger than a mouse’, then the objects can be compared along the dimension of size. The objective of the lesson is for your child to learn to derive that ‘the elephant is bigger than the mouse and the mouse is smaller than the elephant.’

In this lesson, our Nursery 2 children worked on classification activities to compare things in a systematic way along different dimensions. To strengthen their observational and matching skills, they also used measuring spoons to review ordinal positions and relate sizes with amounts.

In all, these activities help to improve the ability to find similarities and differences between objects as well as developing stronger problem-solving skills.

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2017)

Conservation refers to a logical thinking ability that allows a person to determine that a certain quantity will remain the same despite adjustment of the container, shape, or apparent size.

This stage of cognitive development is characterised by children focusing on a single, salient dimension of height or length, while ignoring other important dimensions about a situation.

In this lesson, our Kindergarten 1 children compared sizes of solids and amounts of liquid through several hands-on activities. After which, they observed and understood that the amount of liquid /volume will be the same even though it is poured into different sized containers.

This highlights the importance of logical-reversible thought, an element necessary to conserve, as being a critical component to a child's ability to perform inverse mathematical problems fluently (5+2=7; 7-5=2).

KINDERGARTEN 2 (born in 2016)

It is important to learn about area and perimeter as it is the foundation for understanding advanced aspects of geometry such as volume and mathematical theorems that help us understand algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.

Learning about length and area on a grid helps children understand the concept of unit squares. The grid will help children better visualise unit squares and in turn understand area, which is important in primary school math.

In this lesson, our Kindergarten 2 children explored length and perimeter using a geoboard. On the geoboard, creating shapes and lines allows them to count the spaces to measure the perimeter and length. As the lesson progress to the abstract stage with the grids removed, children will have to visualize the grid lines on paper and then calculate the area and perimeter accurately.

These concepts of area and perimeter provides practical benefits such as estimating space in any form of drawing/building and prepare them for primary school maths concepts!
