HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

THINKING & REASONING WITH SHAPES

Explore, discover & solve problems through fun & interactive lessons!

Our students develop thinking & reasoning skills in 6 different learning areas, using a unique balance of hands-on experiential learning, challenging puzzles and table work to build focus and attention span.

What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of one lesson focused on visual-spatial skills and geometry concepts.

NURSERY 1 (born in 2019)

Try showing your child a small part of a shape, is he or she able to identify the shape straightaway?

This skill is called visual closure, where the brain develop ability to identify or recognize an object when only shown a small part of it.

Last term, we touched on understanding shapes properties for our Nursery 1 children. To help them hone geometric intuition, we reinforced the concepts of these properties onto different sizes of shapes.

In this lesson, we increased the intensity of geometric skills by focusing on visual closure with overlapping shapes. Hands-on activities help to train children’s thinking process to observe and compare the different shapes.

As they become more sensitive to missing parts of any objects, their spatial awareness skills greatly increases as well.
•
Tese geometric skills can help children be more equipped in picking up information in their surroundings and environment.

NURSERY 2 (born in 2018)

Lines are an important element for children to apply onto art as well as mathematics!

Straight lines form the basis of 2D and 3D geometry and are the building blocks for forming letters. In addition, it is also applicable in nearly every aspect of daily life. For example, when playing with blocks, the child has to ensure that the foundation is built straight so that the structure will be stable and less prone to collapsing.

In this lesson, we introduced the concept of straight lines such as horizontal, vertical and right/left diagonal lines to our Nursery 2 children. As they explore and arrange objects in straight lines, they learn to see from different perspectives (Top view, Side View).

As a whole, this is a forward progress towards a more complex mathematical problem-solving skill. Children can think beyond typical solutions and sharpen mathematical skills that transcend to curricular knowledge.

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2017)

Patterns and problem-solving work together hand in hand! Here’s why:

Patterning is a stepping stone towards a very early form of analogical reasoning, which becomes the strategy to problem-solving.

In this lesson, our Kindergarten 1 children work on activities to identify and translate patterns sequence. As they work towards this, they go through skills of encoding, inferring, mapping and applying of pattern relations.

Spotting these underlying patterns is important for identifying many different kinds of mathematical relationships. It also underpins memorisation of the counting sequence and understanding number operations, for instance recognizing that if you add numbers in a different order their total stays the same.

Pattern awareness would be expected to produce better understanding of mathematics, especially early algebra.

KINDERGARTEN 2 (born in 2016)

Having good visual perception skills is not only essential in daily living but also when solving problems involving images. Therefore, in this lesson we focused on helping our Kindergarten 2 boost their observation skills further.

In this lesson, we work on observation skills through a series of visual memory, visual discrimination games and puzzles. As they work on these activities, they learn to better concentrate, think and to pay attention to details.

Besides this, we also focused on mastering lines of symmetry. Such activities strongly engage children’s logical thinking and problem solving skills where they have to think with flexibility. In all, both their spatial and visual perception skills will be further boosted.
