HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

THINKING & REASONING WITH WORDS

Explore, discover & solve problems through fun & interactive lessons!

Our students develop thinking & reasoning skills in 6 different learning areas, using a unique balance of hands-on experiential learning, challenging puzzles and table work to build focus and attention span.

What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of one lesson focused on listening & comprehension skills.

A child with good listening & comprehension skills will not only excel in Primary School, but also learn new things and concepts faster.

NURSERY 1 (born in 2018)

Listening is the process of assimilating information from what we hear. It involves a conscious decision to participate intellectually with the speaker.

Good listening is dependent on the ability to remain focused and resist distractions - so that the contents of a message may be delivered and received successfully - from the speaker to the listener.

In this lesson, children will practice good listening etiquette and demonstrate their abilities of recollecting and processing audio information. Your child will also be engaged in cooperative team play, to follow and give out clear and accurate instructions.

From this experience, your child will become more in-tune with their sense of hearing and learn ways in which these powers can be tapped into more effectively.

We also seek to motivate children to become better listeners by highlighting the power and reliability of listening skills for observing and understanding the world around.

Storytelling trains children to communicate logically and express themselves in a manner that is easily understood by others. It is a method to engage your child and strengthen his/her language skills.

The process of storytelling involves a conversion of ideas into meaningful sentences. In this lesson, your child will be guided through this process of narrative creation, by visualising a still or moving image in their mind. Subsequently, he/she will draw into their vocabulary bank (including new words and phrases picked up during this lesson), to describe that mental image in the best possible way.

However, successful storytelling also requires proper communication. Here, children will be involved with public speaking activities, to develop confidence in articulation and expression.

Conversely, your child will also practice listening comprehension, to assimilate and process ideas communicated by the storyteller, as well as attempt to guess the meaning of new words (or phrases) presented in the narrative through logical inference.

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2016)

Improved fluency results in clearer, more coherent and flexible thinking.

To cultivate a love for the language, children will be engaged through stories – to listen, understand, retell or role-play narratives.

These stories allow children to form a connection with the characters through shared or imagined experiences. From these stories, children can also pick up useful information that helps in their understanding of the world around them.

This lesson, children will learn about the components that make up the content of a story – such as the characters of and their relationships with one another, the place/location, the challenges that characters may face and solutions to overcome them.

A better appreciation of these details will help children create more elaborate and interesting stories. Your child will also learn how to organize their thoughts; and express their ideas in a logical and structured manner.

From this experience, we seek to develop confident and self-motivated writers capable of expressing ideas in creative ways.

Inference is a "foundational skill" necessary for comprehension, learning new vocabulary and higher-order thinking.

In this lesson, children will be guided through strategies to make meaningful inferences.

For instance, they would practise active listening and focus to observing for clues in text, pictures or from past experiences.
These clues will provide important details necessary for your child to piece information together and make better sense of the entire narrative / situation.

Such activities develop the confidence and competence in children to tackle new words that they may encounter during reading; and guess the meaning of these words based on the given context.
