HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

THINKING & REASONING WITH NUMBERS

Explore, discover & solve problems through fun & interactive lessons!

Our students develop thinking & reasoning skills in 6 different learning areas, using a unique balance of hands-on experiential learning, challenging puzzles and table work to build focus and attention span.

What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of one lesson focused on numeracy skills and concepts.

Her

NURSERY 1 (born in 2019)

Having a strong grip on numeracy skills and concepts allow your child to make meaningful relationships and connections in their day to day experiences.

In this lesson, we used relevant and realistic situations to build prior knowledge on numeracy concepts for our preschoolers. For instance, the use of bar graphs triggers their analysing and comparison skills.

Following last week’s focus on visual perception skill, these activities use spatial representations of quantity which help them to connect numbers and relate to one another easily.

By learning through hands-on activities and manipulating concrete materials, children will be able to perform better in any mathematical problems in the later years.

NURSERY 2 (born in 2018)

Most children achieve mental arithmetic by using physical objects like counters before moving on to pictorial representation of computation! However, in the long run, they should not rely only on physical objects to solve the mathematics problems.

In this lesson, we focused on helping our Nursery 2 children create mental images of objects in their minds to perform addition and subtraction calculations mentally. This was done so by emphasizing counting on and counting back.

To give you a better understanding:
(for combinations involving one, two or three):

·         eight and one (8 and 1): “eight… nine”
·         seven and two (7 and 2): “seven…eight, nine”
·         six and three (6 and 3): “six..seven, eight, nine”
·         9 take away 3: “nine…, eight, seven, six” (count-back by 1, 2 or 3)

In all, activities involving counting helps to strengthen their mental calculations skills which can be manipulated flexibly with understanding and confidence.

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2017)

Most struggles in math involve problems in counting, memorizing math facts and other basic number sense skills. Therefore it is extremely important for your child to develop number sense skills from a young age! Allow them to have a background in math before moving on to primary school!

To ensure that our children have a solid grasp on number sense, we worked on several activities which boost their understanding in these areas:
• Number meaning
• Number relationships
• Number magnitude
• Operations involving numbers
• Referents for numbers and quantities.

In this lesson, we walked through the concept of referents for number quantities and relationships with a mini race game. Competing each other, they will then compare the quantity of counters (fruits) they obtained. The children would have to compare first before counting the actual amount. This not only strengthens estimation but substituting skill which appears to be based on the mind's ability to form stable mental images of patterns and associate them with a number.

These skills are considered important because they contribute to general intuitions about numbers and lay the foundation for more advanced skills.

KINDERGARTEN 2 (born in 2016)

If two people have the same number of candies and one person gives the other person 1 candy, then the difference between their number of candies is …? Were you having trouble trying to paint this whole picture in your head and counting the numbers mentally?

In order to excel in number exchange concepts, children need to have a strong understanding of the part-whole relationships of numbers, as numbers are split into parts and are constantly being exchanged.

In this lesson, we placed emphasis on substitution of items in activities to help children apply these skills in mathematical concepts, daily play and life skills!

These activities certainly help children to grasp the concept of the number exchange before moving on to pictorial on paper which require them to practice abstract thinking and mental sums.
