THINKING & REASONING WITH SPATIAL RELATIONS

Explore, discover & solve problems through fun & interactive lessons!

Our students develop thinking & reasoning skills in 6 different learning areas, using a unique balance of hands-on experiential learning, challenging puzzles and table work to build focus and attention span.

What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of our latest lesson which develops visual-spatial skills.

Her

NURSERY 1 (born in 2017)

How does understanding positions help preschoolers?

It greatly helps them to be more aware of space around them, be more adept at expressing themselves, gain a better sense of interacting and moving with people and objects in their surroundings.

In this lesson, we incorporated activities such as locating an animal tower and exploring positions of train cabins to allow our Nursery 1 children to master the concept of positions and communicate effectively about space and things in their surroundings using words instead of pointing.

As they learn about the positions ( front /middle /back and top /middle /bottom) , as well as use the corresponding ordinal numbers (first /second /last) with their bodily experiences, they grasp the concept of spatial orientation more effectively.

NURSERY 2 (born in 2016)

Directions such as “Watch out for that bicycle on your right!” can be confusing or meaningless if there is a lacked sense of left and right.

Distinguishing left from right is important as it can affect daily life, sports and mathematics performance. Therefore, it is beneficial for your child to master the use of left and right at this young age before tackling more difficult situations in the coming years.

In this lesson, we make use of children’s kinetic sense to help them understand left and right from their own perspective through a map with junctions and also thinking from different perspectives.

This concept of left and right helps to boost their capabilities further in making sense of where objects are in space.

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2015)

Rotational transformation is a foundational concept required for the learning of geometric angles as well as the interpretation of time for an analog clock.

Here, children will rotate 2D and 3D objects about a single point to understand directional change. In addition, he/she will learn to discern between the clockwise and anticlockwise directions of rotation.

As a direct application of the shape division concept (of circles), children will be challenged to make quarter, half and whole circular turns. This activity will demand a certain level of visual-spatial mastery, to understand, distinguish and calculate different angles of rotation even in the absence of a physical object.

KINDERGARTEN 2 (born in 2014)

Most children are still very reliant on finger pointing or rudimentary vocabulary to communicate the idea of position and direction.  However, as spatial concepts increase in complexity, so will the demand to understand and describe spatial relationships with greater accuracy/specificity.

Expanding on their knowledge of rows and columns, this lesson will focus on equipping your child with the ability to locate and describe - in proper sentences - the specific positions / coordinates within a 7 x 7 grid. Here, ordinal positioning concepts will be revisited. Children will have the opportunity to apply their perspective-taking skills to describe grid positions, which can be presented in different ways depending on the initial reference point.

Your child will also be challenged to visualise and keep track of a token’s movement following a series of scenario-based instructions.

Such activities seek to lay the primary foundation for table chart and graphing concepts.
