HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

THINKING & REASONING WITH MEASUREMENT

Explore, discover & solve problems through fun & interactive lessons!

Our students develop thinking & reasoning skills in 6 different learning areas, using a unique balance of hands-on experiential learning, challenging puzzles and table work to build focus and attention span.

What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of our latest lesson.

Her

NURSERY 1 (born in 2017)

Most children perceive objects to be heavy or light just by the judgement of their sizes. Larger objects typically tend to be heavier, while smaller objects tend to be lighter. However, that is not the case!

In this lesson, our Nursery 1 children were introduced to the concept of the relationship between weight and size.

With the use of different sized objects in class, they were required to predict if the objects are heavier or lighter before weighing them personally. After which, sorting of these objects help them to easily identify and compare between heavier and lighter objects.

As they arrange the objects according to their weight, they apply the concept of positive correlation. This concept helps them to further understand the relationship between two different objects while putting them in ascending or descending order.

NURSERY 2 (born in 2016)

Give your preschooler a simple task of matching lids to their containers. They may do exceptionally well in matching the correct lids to the correct sized containers. However, if you require them to arrange the containers in order, they may face difficulties in doing so!

This is because, this skill of corresponding groups of objects by size requires multiple-step analytical thinking. It is not as easy as just matching.

Preschoolers have to work on the following for such activities;
(1) Analyse the situation (using their logical skills)
(2) Problem-solve by arranging the boxes and lids which are randomly placed in ascending/ descending order (biggest to smallest/ smallest to biggest)
(3) Match each lid to the corresponding container

This helps children understand relationships between objects and build on their logical thinking capabilities while linking groups of objects in a meaningful way.

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2015)

When comparing items, at times we are unable to tell which is bigger/smaller just by looking at it!

Therefore, in last week’s lesson we introduced ‘Area” to our Kindergarten 1 children. Area shows how much space something takes up, which accurately tells us about the sizes of objects.

To assist them in measurement, we started off with non-standard units such as strings, before moving on to the challenging step of measurement using standard units such as lengths.

To further develop their flexible thinking skills, we focused on decentration. This involves the ability to pay attention to multiple attributes of an object or situation rather than being locked into attending to only a single attribute. (e.g. when comparing different items, the same measuring tool has to be used)

In all, these concepts lay the foundation for understanding other aspects of geometry such as volume and mathematical theorems that help us understand algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.

KINDERGARTEN 2 (born in 2014)

The see-saw serves as a visual thinking machine in solving mathematics problems involving weight!

In this week’s lesson, we fully utilised the see-saw and the weighing scale to help your child understand the meaning of balancing.

As your child works with the balance, they begin to form an intuitive understanding of balance, leverage, mass and mathematical computation.

Besides that, as they compare up to 5 objects by weight, their deducing relationships between objects will be strengthened.

As they work towards solving these problems, they build up one-to-many correspondence and multiplicative reasoning skills.
