What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of our latest lesson.


Her

NURSERY 1 (born in 2016)

When children first learn about size, they assume that things fall definitively into either of the two categories - big or small. For example, elephants are big while rabbits small. With time, children learn to understand size in a more logical way - whereby size is relative.

Hence, when considering the size of an animal (i.e., elephant), children need to be aware of the reference point taken. Even though an elephant can be considered a large animal when compared to most other animals (reference point), an elephant is also smaller in comparison to a whale (alternative reference point). Additionally, not all elephants are equal in size. A baby elephant may be smaller compared to a lion, while a full-grown elephant can be much larger.

Therefore, this lesson focuses on building an awareness on the relativity of size. Here, children will be presented with two contrasting sets of objects. One set comprises of discrete objects while the other set comprises of similar objects. Your child will be guided to match, distinguish, order and sort objects within each group by physical attribute (size), following verbal and written instructions. This experience seeks to deepen your child’s grasp on the concept of logical comparison and the understanding of physical attribute measurements, while practicing the use of comparison words for more effective communication.

NURSERY 2 (born in 2015)

While many children can make basic comparisons, most remain unfamiliar to the diversity of comparative language vocabulary.
For instance, your child may use the word “small” instead of “short” as the opposite for “long”.
This lesson seeks to expose and familiarise your child to commonly used adjective word-pairs. An understanding of these keywords will better facilitate the learning of physical attributes and measurement concepts (i.e., length, weight, height, size and volume).

In the practical aspect, this lesson focuses on the physical attribute of length/distance.
We begin by using non-standard measurement units (paper clips, cube blocks, hands, feet) to quantify the length of other everyday objects.
Through these experiences, your child will gain a better sense of length/distance while acquiring knowledge and technical skills to measure both straight and curved lines.
Your child will also need to demonstrate his/her understanding of hierarchical ordering, to arrange the items measured in both ascending and descending order of length.

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2014)

Measurement concepts promote the understanding of our world through numbers.
However, a single object can have a wide range of physical attributes. Hence it is important to understand which and why a particular attribute is being measured at any given time.
This week, we will be exploring the physical attribute of weight. Children tend to equate size with the weight of an object.
However, size and weight are two physical attributes that do not necessarily correlate.
Through different examples, your child will gain greater awareness of weight as a physical attribute and understand how this physical attribute is measured.

The lesson aims to develop your child’s level of familiarity towards estimating and interpreting results. Here, your child will learn how a see-saw works; to compare and predict the relative weights between two objects. Additionally, he/she will be engaging in the process of logical comparison and elimination, to arrange 3-5 weighted objects in hierarchical order.
Your child will also have the opportunity to practice communication skills, using speech and body language to express comparison and measurement ideas.
Ultimately, these techniques build a framework that guides future decision making, to enhance your child’s observation, inference and judgement skills.

KINDERGARTEN 2 (born in 2013)

The ability to make logical inferences facilitates some of the deepest levels of literacy and comprehension. Back in Term 6, Kindergarten 1 children were taught how to deduce the hierarchical relationship (order of weights) from a group of 3 objects using the process of comparison and elimination.

Building on this aspect of logical comparison, we will now expose your Kindergarten 2 child to several other commonly observed and expressed forms of hierarchical relationships, namely: strength, speed, distance, quantity & height; whilst increasing the number of objects in the group for analysis.

Through the use of several practice examples, we hope to reinforce the important concept of transitive relationships. Your child will be guided to make predictions/inferences from a given set of information – beyond the literal understanding of given facts. For example, if it is known that A>B and B>C, then A>C would be a logical inference.

Here, your child will be tasked to recall and apply the comparison-and-elimination method to analyse questions of increased difficulty. He/she will also be challenged to apply this concept mentally, without the reliance on physical/visual aids. Finally, your child will be introduced to complementary problem-solving techniques to guide hierarchical comparison.
