THINKING & REASONING WITH SHAPES

Explore, discover & solve problems through fun & interactive lessons!

Our students develop thinking & reasoning skills in 6 different learning areas, using a unique balance of hands-on experiential learning, challenging puzzles and table work to build focus and attention span.

What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of our latest lesson on listening & comprehension skills. A child with good listening & comprehension skills will not only excel in Primary School, but also learn new things and concepts faster.

NURSERY 1 (born in 2017)

At an early age, children have the ability to recognise and differentiate between shapes. Through cooperative pattern-block play, we seek to extend your child’s knowledge of 2D shapes and hone observational skills.

Your child will learn of new shapes (i.e. trapezium, hexagon and rhombus), distinguish between shapes based on attributes (number of sides, number of corners, straight vs curved side) as well as part-whole relationships through shape composition (i.e. different ways to form a hexagon using a combination of triangles, trapeziums and rhombus).

There will also be continuous reinforcement of spatial language in the form of orientation (‘turn’, ‘flip’), position (‘top’, ‘bottom’) and direction (‘left’, ‘right’). This can help support the internalisation of visual-spatial concepts.

An enhanced understanding of shapes aids letter and number recognition, which supports reading, writing and numeracy development.

NURSERY 2 (born in 2016)

Regardless of language, letter symbols contain a variety of curves, lines, corners and intersect – just like shapes.

That is why an understanding of 2D shapes can provide your child a useful foundation for alphabet recognition; and play a critical for the development of reading and writing skills at this early stage of learning.

Your child will explore the use of different shapes to create a picture, through shape composition (putting multiple shapes together), shape manipulation (folding shapes) and shape extension (drawing out from a shape to create something new).

These activities seek to stimulate your child’s story–telling and creativity, encourage mental visualisation, practice hand-eye coordination as well as reinforce on shape attributes (i.e. number of sides, number of corners).

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2015)

Fractions are the expression of part-whole relationships through numerators and denominators.

The concept of fractions requires a basic understanding of equal sharing and proportional reasoning. However, these ideas are often implied and under-emphasised in primary school. Because of this, your child may lack the understanding required to attain full mastery and instead rely too heavily on rote learning. This in turn would interfere with your child’s progress through more advanced areas of mathematics (i.e. percentages & ratios)

This lesson aims to deepen your child’s understanding of part-whole relationships and arithmetic division expressed through fractions, while building that critical visual connection between number fractions and geometric shape compositions to aid interpretation and visualisation of word problems.

KINDERGARTEN 2 (born in 2014)

Visual form constancy is the skill of manipulating images mentally into different positions just by looking at it.  Children with poor form-constancy may struggle to recognise objects presented from different orientations or vantage points.

This lesson seeks to develop your child’s visual form constancy through exposure to overlapping images, including both direct overlaps and folding overlaps. These activities will train your child’s visual-spatial skills, to mentally capture 2 sets of information independently, before combining the layers of information, one on top of the other.

Through concrete examples presented in the form of transparencies, your child will have the opportunity to self-check and explore various layering combinations, thereby building a strong foundation for the overlapping concept and perspective-taking.
