HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

THINKING & REASONING WITH SHAPES

Explore, discover & solve problems through fun & interactive lessons!

Our students develop thinking & reasoning skills in 6 different learning areas, using a unique balance of hands-on experiential learning, challenging puzzles and table work to build focus and attention span.

What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of our latest lesson.

NURSERY 1 (born in 2016)

Heightened pattern awareness helps children acquire inductive reasoning skills as they observe for regularities and irregularities that guide their understanding of relationships and prediction-making.

This lesson serves to expose children to patterns in various forms, while reinforcing on the use of comparative keywords such as “same” and “different”.

Through the use of basic shapes (square, triangle, rectangle & circle), children are introduced to the idea of comparing shapes based on the similarities and differences of known attributes (i.e. number of sides, number of corners).

We subsequently extend this idea of comparison to three branches, namely:
1. Big-picture comparison - Making sense of given silhouettes and matching them to their corresponding objects.
2. Fine-detail comparison - Differentiating between two similar pictures presented side-by-side.
3. Repeated-sequence recognition – Identifying/following repeating sequences and subsequently predicting how the pattern will continue.

Collaborative assignments test your children’s social / communication skills – whilst providing our team opportunities to facilitate your child’s learning journey of self-expression, negotiation and respecting one another. Throughout the lesson, your child will be tasked to work with others to build different 3D structures.

As this week’s objective, your child will learn how to recognize several basic 3D shapes, their corresponding attributes as well as the implications of said attributes.

Your child will then be challenged to interpret pictorial (8-cube) 3D figures; and subsequently keep track of the figure as it undergoes single-step transformation between pictures. Building these 3D structures from pictorial samples require depth awareness and perception. By learning how to track 3D transformations, children develop their mental visualization and rotation capabilities.

Aside from geometry, this lesson also acts as an intuitive way to introduce/reinforce the concepts of part-part-whole relationships, volume and conservation.

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2014)

This lesson takes a hands-on approach to learning geometry. Your child will be taught to differentiate between 2D and 3D shapes, in both physical and illustrated forms.

While relying solely on the sense of touch, your child will learn how to describe, and subsequently identify 3D shapes (i.e. cube, cuboid, prism, cylinder, cone & sphere) - based on tactile attributes.

Concurrently, your child will discover the implications of said attributes (ability to roll, slide and/or stack on top of one another), associate these 3D shapes with everyday objects, before being tasked to re-create their own 3D shapes using modeling clay.

Lastly, your child will be challenged to utilize their mental visualization and rotation capabilities to keep track of a 8-cube 3D figure as it undergoes (1-3 step) structural transformation between pictures.

Such iterative exercises help cultivate the intuitive sense towards 3D figures in general, while encouraging fast and flexible thinking.

Tables (chart) organize information visually and systematically, following a set (pair) of rules in the row and column headings.

In this lesson, your child will learn to identify and execute these rules, populating the tables accordingly. Moreover, you child will also learn how to analyze patterns found on these tables, to logically predict / deduce the pair of rules that apply (reverse-thinking).

Subsequently, we will introduce the concept of grid coordinates, where your child will learn to pin-point a particular position within a chart using the x-y coordinate system. During this process, we will also expose them to the idea of connecting two x-y coordinates together to form a line, as a precursor to graph plotting.

Finally, your child will be tasked to directly apply the concepts learnt from this lesson to navigation, using both x-y coordinates and visible landmarks as a tool to describe particular routes and destinations.

Building on such awareness heightens children’s sensitivity towards pattern recognition and use these patterns to make sense of things around them.
