HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

THINKING & REASONING WITH WORDS

Explore, discover & solve problems through fun & interactive lessons!

Our students develop thinking & reasoning skills in 6 different learning areas, using a unique balance of hands-on experiential learning, challenging puzzles and table work to build focus and attention span.

What types of activities do our students work on and how do they benefit from these activities? How does KUNO method support students as they progress from 3 to 6 years old?

Here are the highlights of our latest lesson.

Her

NURSERY 1 (born in 2016)

Vocabulary is an essential part of literacy. It is intimately connected to both effective reading and writing skills. In addition, children with a rich vocabulary are better able to grasp ideas, understand others and express themselves, which help to build on their interpersonal skills.

In this lesson, we develop the children’s verbal classification skills by building up their word knowledge of items and discover the concept linking these items. We use common household items for a start to facilitate home reinforcement. Children will be introduced to the names of common household items, shops that can be found in their neighbourhood and what they sell.

These activities will help to boost their self-efficacy, as they can identify and communicate the tools to use to execute desired actions independently.

NURSERY 2 (born in 2015)

Strong oral communication requires good listening, speaking and comprehension skills. This can be achieved by extending and expanding their sentences, letting them learn new vocabulary and create fascinating content.

In this lesson, your child learns how to convey non-verbal cues and ideas through words. Each child will draw information from a visual stimulus and perform the action shown, for example, wiping the table, while the rest of the class will try to guess what he/she is doing. After that, each child will pick a picture card and describe the picture in the Action-Feeling format.

We also placed focus in visual memory activities. Visual memory activities develop the ability to remember things and more importantly, retrieve learned information through recall. It exercises the brain, increases the brain’s capacity to retain more information and helps your child to practise focus as well.

KINDERGARTEN 1 (born in 2014)

Auditory memory involves being able to take information that is presented orally, to process that information , store it in one’s mind and then recall what was heard. Working on auditory memory skills can help children develop the ability to listen to longer strings of words as demands for vocabulary and language grow.

In this lesson, emphasis will be placed on listening comprehension. To further develop auditory memory, you child will be getting their hands on an activity linking instrument sounds to toy animals. They will have to pay attention to the sound made and choose the correct animal that corresponds to the instrument. Besides that, to improve on their storytelling skills, they will be given mixed up picture cards and they will determine the sequence of each picture based on the story.

All these will allow them to practice focusing and listening attentively, as well as working on their cognitive thinking skills.

KINDERGARTEN 2 (born in 2013)

Listening comprehension tests children’s ability to listen for understanding, both with and without the aid of visual information. It is not only related to auditory memory, but a bundle of skills such as the ability to focus and: (1) listen for main gist (2) listen for details (3) listen to make inferences about the message (4) listen to make predictions about what is going to happen and (5) listen for information to complete set tasks.

In this lesson, your child first has to listen attentively and transform information heard into drawings. Skills gleaned from prior lessons – geometry, map skills and ordering skills, will also be integrated with listening exercises. Before drawing conclusions, they will need to work on inferential thinking and their working memory as they gather information from their current knowledge base.

This will help to spur your child to listen purposefully for key words and organise auditory information mentally so as to complete set tasks.
