HOME REINFORCEMENT SUPPORT

Picture
25 March 2020

Dear Parents,

Following MOH’s advisory on 24 March, we have suspended all classes with immediate effect until 30 April.

Our experiential & interactive classes will resume on 1 May. Children attending our usual Thursday classes on 30 April may join the lessons on 1 to 3 May. We will send a lesson reminder nearer the date.

In our letter to you, we shared our rationale for not replacing lessons with eLearning:

(1)   First, objective of KUNO method programme to improve your child’s cognitive ability, thinking, reasoning and problem-solving skills. These skills are best imparted through hands-on learning and interaction with trained teachers, instead of being fed information.

 (2) Second, young children learn differently from adults. Young children learn by processing concrete information based on what they see, hear, feel and think. They also do not have the attention span to sit through a 75 minutes online seminar and remember key learning points.

 (3) Third, difficult to replicate lessons at home without compromising effectiveness. Every KUNO method lesson involves a balance of fun group play (to learn and pick up social skills), hands-on activities (to practise), oral & written practice (to apply) and puzzle play. While we try to use everyday life items in our lessons, substantial preparation is required.

We are grateful that many of you think the same way and supported our course of action to restrict screen time, especially for children under 5 years old.

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement during this difficult time.

Best regards
Teachers and Management

4-Week Home Reinforcement Special

Consistent learning of skills and concepts makes a real and lasting difference during your child's formative years.

Therefore, in these 5 weeks of lesson suspension and #stayhome movement, we would like to continue to support you and your child by providing instructional videos on parent-child bonding activities and printables.

We carefully selected 5 different cognitive abilities to work on as these are the skills that requires continuous practice to master;
1) Visual-spatial & problem-solving skills
2) Spatial reasoning skills
3) Number concepts - Division / Multiplication
4) Memory with grids
5) Logical thinking skills

We would also like to encourage you to do these parent-child bonding activities
with your child to help with their mental, social and emotional development.

Enjoy the activities that we prepared for you, stay safe and we will see you in May!

Lessons may be suspended but learning continues!

To show our appreciation for your continuous support and trust, we have carefully prepared home reinforcement instructional videos for you and printables for your child

Here's what you will get on every Friday of the week:

(1) Home reinforcement instructional video on how you can help your child to train the skills at home

(2) Printable PDF (available only to existing sudents - password whatsapped to you)

As an extension to the video, we have put together printable activity sheets for the different levels (N1, N2, K1, K2) for your child to practise.

Week 1 (27 March): Visual-Spatial & Problem-Solving Skills

Puzzles are important for preschoolers as they help children to develop motor skills, cognitive skills and emotional skills.

Week 2 (3rd April): Spatial Ability with Maps

Spatial ability is the capacity to understand and remember the spatial relations among objects. This ability is a unique type of intelligence which is different from other forms of intelligence, such as verbal ability, reasoning ability, and memory skills.

Research has shown that exceptional spatial ability predicts creativity, innovative potential and academic achievements, especially in the STEM fields.

Spatial ability training is badly neglected in our schools. By giving it earlier and better emphasis, we can help more children unlock their potential.

For this week, try using a map navigation activity to help your child level up!

Week 3 (10 April): Numeracy | Division & Multiplication

Numerical reasoning skills include connecting numbers to quantities. At this age, it is crucial for preschoolers to develop number sense. Number sense allows them to count forward and backwards, in order to learn the relationship between numbers.

Division and multiplication skills allow children to apply them into real life scenarios such as sharing a pie or handling money.

Concepts of division and multiplication are also introduced to set a foundation of mathematical problem-solving for preschoolers to succeed in Primary School.

Here's how you can practise these concepts at home with your child!

Week 4 (17 April): Memory with Grids

Simple spatial concepts allow children to be more aware of their surroundings. With the use of grids in activities, you can help to strengthen your child's spatial intelligence.

This activity involves the use of spatial language and visual spatial skills which is important for children to establish spatial relations between objects or places.

Let your child work on this simple activity and boost his spatial ability significantly!

Week 5 (24 April): Correspondence Skills | Sizes

A larger bag is needed to hold more things while a smaller baby wears a smaller shirt. Many young children understand this concept of comparison. However, when we involve ordering in the comparison between two or more parties, young children are then required to think multiple steps.

In this video, the activity focuses on correspondence skills with sizes. With this small activity, develop your child's logical thinking abilities and help them to understand the relationship between two objects or more better.
